Larry Byers and Joey Peace are new Joint-Masters at Aiken. / Randy Wolcott photoThe venerable Aiken Hounds (SC)—a pack steeped in the history of North American sport—has appointed Larry Byers and Joann “Joey” Peace as Joint-Masters. Established in 1914, the Aiken Hounds hunt the drag through the Hitchcock Woods.
“They both bring wonderful talent to the hunt,” said Senior Master Linda Knox McLean. “Larry has a great love and appreciation for the sport. He loves hounds, is very active with them, and walks them out on Katherine’s [huntsman Katherine Gunter’s] day off. He’s an inspiring individual.
“And Joey—I call her Master-Peace—is a financial wizard. She’ll be a big help in the business end of the hunt. She grew up hunting with the Green Spring Valley Hounds (MD), and she winters in Aiken.”
Like the Aiken Hounds, Byers can also be described as venerable and steeped in the history of North American sport! He is a past-president of the United States Pony Clubs. He lives in Aiken and has been regularly whipping-in to three hunts there—Why Worry, Whiskey Road, and Aiken. He is a former Master and huntsman of the Santa Fe Hunt (CA). He also whipped-in to the Plum Run Hunt (PA) and is a retired Marine Corps aviator.
“With these two classy individuals joining me, it’s the happiest I’ve ever been as Master!” said McLean.
