The 2018 Penn-Marydel Foxhound Show was held on Saturday, May 12, 2018, in Fair Hill, Maryland. In spite of a rather bleak weather forecast for the afternoon, the rain held off, and we finished up well ahead of the evening storms for this, our sixty-fourth foxhound show.
Well over one hundred hounds were entered from eight packs: Andrews Bridge Foxhounds (PA), Golden’s Bridge Hounds (NY), Kimberton Hunt (PA), Lewisville Hunt, Marlborough Hunt (MD), Mt. Carmel Foxhounds, Red Oak Foxhounds (VA), and Snickersville Hunt (VA).
Andrews Bridge Kodiak 2014 won the Registered Stallion Hound Class, was Champion Registered Dog, and went on to become Champion Penn-Marydel Foxhound. Kodiak (Golden’s Bridge Phoenix 2012 ex Golden’s Bridge Kiwi 2011) was bred by Golden’s Bridge. Kodiak’s sire, Phoenix 2012, bred by Andrews Bridge, was Grand Champion Foxhound at both the Virginia Foxhound Show and the Bryn Mawr Hound Show in 2014, chosen over the American, Crossbred, and English Champions at both shows. Phoenix remains the second of only two Penn-Marydels ever to be judged Grand Champion Foxhound at Virginia.
Golden’s Bridge Runaway 2011 won the Brood Bitch, Champion Registered Bitch, and was Reserve Champion Penn-Marydel Foxhound to Kodiak.
Judging this year was Donald Philhower, huntsman for the Millbrook Hunt (NY) and a recent recipient of the MFHA’s Ian Milne Award. With this award, Donald joins a small but exclusive circle of just four North American huntsmen of outstanding character and ability so honored.
Expertly and efficiently, Donald made his choices in each class. In the Listed Division, Lewisville Lonesome 2016 won the Champion Listed for a second year, with Lewisville Joy 2014 chosen as Best of Opposite Sex.
Registered Puppy Champion went to Yeti (Golden’s Bridge), with Best of Opposite Sex to Chanel (Golden’s Bridge).
The Pack Class, always a favorite and the highlight of the show, was won by Andrews Bridge Foxhounds, a uniform pack of black and tans which handled beautifully for huntsman Adam Townsend and whipper-in Lori Townsend. All four packs entered in this class were spectacular to watch.
The quality of the Penn-Marydel foxhound continues to improve each year. Competition is keen, which says our breed is in a good place and has a bright future.
