The Piedmont Fox Hounds 2013 Point-to-Point Races went off under brilliant skies on Saturday, March 23, 2013 with some exciting racing over the big, rolling timber course that includes stone walls, drop fences, and reverses of direction. Here are a few highlights, with complete results just a click away.

Eva Smithwick, Virginia’s leading trainer in 2012, brought two horses to the winners’ circle. Dr. Alex, owned and ridden by Teddy Zimmerman, battled it out with Justpourit and George Hundt in the stretch to prevail by a length-and-a-half in the Amateur Highweight Timber.

In the Foxhunter Timber, Rutledge Classic from the Snickersville Stable and ridden by Woods Winants gave Smithwick her second win when he came from behind into contention at the last fence and pulled away from Let’s Presume in the stretch.

Mark Beecher rode two winners to the wire. In the Maiden Timber, he coasted home on Turko Service, owned by Frank Bonsal, Jr. and trained by Ann Stewart.

pfhptp13.open timberIn the Open Timber Race for the Rokeby Bowl, Mark Beecher scores his second win of the day aboard Dakota Slew.

Beecher’s second win came aboard Dakota Slew in the Open Timber Race. Trailing the field of three most of the way around the long three-and-a-half mile course and with just three fences left to jump, Beecher cut sharply inside the two leaders on a left-hand turn after the stone wall, grabbed the lead, and won easily. Dakota Slew is owned by Magalen Bryant and trained by Richard Valentine.
