The meets have been announced for the Junior North American Field Hunter Championships in 2011. For fifty bucks, juniors eighteen-and-under can hunt with other juniors in new surroundings and experience camaraderie; competition; and a variety of hunting countries, foxhound types, and hunt staffs. It’s both fun and educational.
Once again, there will be two series—Southern and Northern. The Southern circuit will include the Blue Ridge Hunt, Middleburg Hunt, New Market-Middletown Valley Hounds, Old Dominion Hounds, and Farmington Hunt. The Northern circuit will meet at Mr. Stewart’s Cheshire Hounds, Andrew’s Bridge Foxhounds, Elkridge-Harford Hunt, and the Amwell Valley Hounds. Juniors can hunt with as many hunts as they wish and in both circuits. The finals will be held in the Warrenton Hunt country.
The goal of the organizers is to emphasize the importance of suitability of mount to rider, and to foster an awareness of the need to preserve the countryside. The concept was hatched nine years ago by Douglas Wise, MFH and Iona Pillion, both renowned for their junior foxhunting programs.
