coniston

Bernice Melrose, who lives in Australia, purchased this wonderful photo about three years ago at auction.

“It’s a beautiful vintage photo,” she wrote, “and I would love to know more about it if possible.”

Knowing that the Coniston is a pack in Cumbria near the English-Scottish border, we forwarded Bernice’s photo to historian/writer Ron Black, who has provided Foxhunting Life readers with many stories of the foot packs of the Lake District.

Ron identifies the two men in the photo as A. Chapman, huntsman and B. Logan, MFH of the Coniston Foxhounds. They are standing with hounds on Sweden Bridge in Ambleside. The photo is by Sanderson and Dixon, also from Ambleside, and the original photograph in Bernice’s possession was made into a postcard in the 1950s.
