Members of the Carrollton Hounds joined members of the Howard County-Iron Bridge Hounds on Sunday, September 18 for a day of autumn foxhunting in the open rolling hills of Frederick County, Maryland. Photographer Susan Bloom captured the action and color of a busy day with hounds.
Carrollton Master and huntsman Dulaney Noble rode out with Howard County huntsman David Pickett, Carrollton Master Jason Dudderar rode out with Howard County Master Roger Scullin, and Howard County Master Donald Reuwer led the combined field of forty-six.
The Howard County pack of 15-½ couple of Maryland-bred hounds provided plenty of sport with three foxes viewed and all run to ground. It was particularly gratifying to see the huntsman able to control his pack when, after Reynard had been put to ground and the earth well marked, the fox proceeded to bolt out a back door. Pickett quietly held hounds, giving the fox a sporting chance. But all the day’s foxes were up for the chase, as the last fox, after a bit of a run, proved quite accommodating and entertaining. He ran straight through the field right in front of several first-time foxhunters much to their delight.
After marking three foxes to ground and with the sun getting high, hounds and field returned to the trailers for a tailgate breakfast and to salute the hosting landowners, the Thomas and Pearre families.
