Trainer Richard Valentine continued his winning ways by saddling winners in the first two timber races at the Piedmont Fox Hounds Point-to-Point on Saturday, March 26, 2011 near Upperville, Virginia. Valentine-trained horses won two races at Warrenton the previous week.
Gus Brown was first at the wire with Beech Cay in the Maiden Timber for Augustin Stables, and George Hundt, Jr., pictured here, won the Owner-Rider Timber on Westbound Road. This was the second win in two weeks for Hundt, who won the Owner-Rider Timber at Warrenton on Justpourit.
Another repeat winner was Mary Motion who stepped up to the Foxhunter Timber with her own horse, Orpington, and an easy win after Orlik and Ice Is Nice, the horses she was stalking, went off course after jumping the fifth fence from the finish. The previous week at Warrenton, Motion won the Novice Rider Flat Race on another mount. Neil Morris trains Orpington.
In the Lady Rider Timber, Blair (Waterman) Wyatt and Bon Caddo shadowed Diana Gillam and Ghengis, the latter pair leading the way for most of the race. After the last fence, Bon Caddo overtook the leader in the stretch and won by five lengths. Dawn Williams trained the winner.
In the Open Timber Race, Incomplete ridden by Charles Fenwick III captured the Rokeby Challenge Bowl for owner Robert Kinsley and trainer Ann Stewart. Fenwick rated Incomplete off the pace and went to the front three fences from home. Radio Flyer and Sand Box Rules, the second- and third-place finishers, joined up with three furlongs to run. Sand Box Rules, who had set the early pace, dropped back first. Incomplete and Radio Flyer jumped the last fence together, but Incomplete drew away in the stretch to win by four-and-a-half lengths.
