The upcoming Sporting Art Auction on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at the Keeneland Sales Pavilion promises to be another outstanding sale for sporting art lovers. Several lots by contemporary American and European artists such as Michael Lyne, Andre Pater, and Juli Kirk feature both British and North American foxhunting. The hammer will fall on paintings by renowned artists such as John Frederick Herring, Jr., Henry Stull, Harry Hall, Henry Alken, Sr., John Emms, Gustav Muss-Arnolt, Franklin Voss, Lionel Edwards, Richard Stone Reeves, and Alfred Munnings. In the category of sculpture, works by Pierre Jules Mene, Alexa King, Marilyn Newmark, LeRoy Nieman, and others will be auctioned.

Last year’s Sporting Art Auction was highly successful. The highest price paid was for Andre Pater’s Red Arrow, which sold for $276,000 after a spirited bidding duel. Pater was on hand to watch the competition for his magnificent and colorful pastel depicting a Lakota warrior, circa 1870, wearing a buckskin war-shirt decorated in locks of horsehair and scalps along his arm, and draped in a buffalo robe. Pater has another Native American portrait consigned to this year’s sale, a black and white charcoal drawing expected to be within the reach of lesser budgets than his last sales topper!
The annual auction combines the expertise of two renowned institutions: Keeneland, the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house and Gregg Ladd’s premier Cross Gate Gallery, both located in Lexington, Kentucky. Steeplechasing, racing, barnyard scenes, hounds and sporting dogs, shooting, sailing, and other outdoor and sporting subjects make up the 175 high quality lots which hang now in the Sales Pavilion at Keeneland for viewing. The works can bee seen daily throughout the Yearling Sales, by appointment after the sales, during the fall Race meet at Keeneland, then by appointment once again until the November Breeding Stock Sales. During the Stock Sales the art is viewable until sold at auction at the conclusion of the Sales.
