Today’s e-magazine sent to about 4,500 foxhunting enthusiasts reached the last recipient’s mailbox at 9:03 am.
At 9:31 am, we received the correct answer to our game from Jim Vatis, who will receive a free year’s subscription to Foxhunting Life.
Two minutes after Jim’s winning reply, Buck Wiseman’s correct answer was received. Snow Hill Farm was third; Georgie Fiske, fourth; and Debra Regh, fifth—all within the first hour.
This horseman with the perfectly classic forward seat is Jackie Robinson, the first African-American in Major League Baseball. He played his first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.
Robinson had graduated from UCLA with varsity letters in basketball, football, baseball, and track. He was drafted by lottery into the 1942 peacetime draft and assigned to a segregated Army cavalry unit, the Ninth Cavalry Regiment, making him one of the historic “Buffalo Soldiers.”
He attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Riley and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in January of 1943. Robinson was honorably discharged from the Army in 1944. The rest is baseball history.
