Captain Ian W. Farquhar, MFH of the Duke of Beaufort (UK), who judged at this show seven years ago, was joined in the ring by John J. Carle II, ex-MFH of the Keswick Hunt (VA).
Ian Farquhar, huntsman for thirty-eight seasons, judged his first show forty-two years ago and has bred nineteen Peterborough champions. Jake Carle, who hunted hounds for twenty-eight seasons, has judged for over forty years at all the major hound shows in the United States. Over the course of the weekend these two very senior judges enjoyed each other immensely and got along famously in the ring despite their English and Bywaters leanings respectively. Interestingly, thirty-four ribbons were won by Crossbreds, and twenty went to English hounds. Two Champions were Crossbred, and two were English.
The Apprentice Judge was Radnor Hunt Master Andrea Herr, who had impressed Marty and me with her comments about hounds while in the Crossbred ring at the Bryn Mawr Hound Show with us.
Eight packs brought hounds. Bear Creek did not show, but well-known huntsman Steve Clifton takes over as of May 1st so I am certain they will return in force in 2016.
In their first appearance were the Lowcountry Hounds with their new huntsman Martyn Blackmore. Also returning were the Palm Beach Hounds. The Southern Hound Show is a wonderful opportunity for professionals, Masters, and hunt supporters to have fun, share knowledge, and tell tall tales!
Live Oak Fanfare’10, last year’s Reserve Grand Champion of Show, was awarded the top prize this year. She is the third in this litter to win Grand Champion of Show, the other two being Fable and Farrier at Virginia. She is tail male to Live Oak Drummer’89, as good a hunter as has been bred in the forty-two year history of the pack.

Midland scored big, winning four classes thanks to English import Staffordshire Moorland Stunning’11, whose get won both unentered classes plus Brood Bitch with Three of Produce and Stallion with Get. Stunning is five generations back to Exmoor Orange County Barber ’89 through her sire and five generations back to Midland Hardaway ’89 through her dam. That double American cross makes her an ideal outcross for the Midland.
Hillsboro’s Entered Bitch winner Graphic’14 is interesting because her sire Jethro’08 goes back to the well used American sire Potomac Jefferson’05. Her dam North Cotswold Greystone’09 hails from Nigel Peel’s famous “G” bitch line.
