Canadian Hound Show Grand Champion Cornwall Woodman 2010 / Paul Wilson photoCornwall Woodman 2010 (Fox River Valley Keystone 2005 ex Mooreland Wedlock 2008) was judged Grand Champion at the Canadian Hound Show held this year at the kennels of the Hamilton Hunt (ON) on June 9, 2012.
Woodman is a Crossbred dog hound entered by Tony Leahy, MFH and huntsman of the Cornwall Hounds and the Fox River Valley Hunt, both in Illinois. Woodman was entered into the MFHA registry as a Cornwall hound, but the Cornwall and Fox River Valley packs are basically one in the same. Woodman is primarily the result of Fox River Valley breeding, but the tail female line—one of Leahy’s best—took a short detour through the Mooreland and the Whiskey Road kennels!
Fox River Valley Winnie 1999 was an English foxhound of Cotswold and Warwickshire breeding. Leahy gave Winnie to Mooreland huntsman Rhodri Jones-Evans, who entered a Winnie granddaughter as Mooreland Wedlock 2008. Jones-Evans put Wedlock to Fox River Valley Keystone 2005, and gave Leahy two puppies from the litter, one of which is Woodman.
Leahy prizes Winnie’s blood, and she appears in Woodman’s sire’s side as well, having been bred to Midland Kestrel 1998 in Woodman’s tail male line.
“This is the most dominant male line in our kennel,” said Leahy, “and the most English of our male lines.”
Woodman is also one eighth Penn-Marydel from Jody Murtagh’s Rose Tree Foxhunting Club (PA) breeding on the dam’s side.
“Woodman is an athletic, rangy hound—a real athlete,” says Leahy. He’s tough and hard, and no day is too long for him! He’s always ready to go.”
Leahy has used Woodman twice and looks forward to entering a litter by him in the coming season.
