greyhound fox.nyplGreyhound Fox  /  Courtesy New York Public LibraryFoxhunting Life reader Janet Clarke asks, “I was told a long time ago that there are different types of foxes in the UK. Is this true?”

We consulted Nigel Peel, MFH and huntsman of the North Cotswold Foxhounds, and Martin Scott, ex-MFH of the Vale of the White Horse. Both men are highly regarded foxhound breeders and judges of foxhounds in England and serve as members of FHL’s Panel of Experts. Their answers were not only surprising, but it appears that the story may be yet unfolding.

Originally it was thought that the "Greyhound " type were confined to mountainous areas of the UK, but on-going research is suggesting the breed were more geographically widespread. To be quite honest the history and development of "foxes" in the UK is a mess with most studies devoted to the urban fox. Our research using DNA hopes to identify "a greyhound" type and any difference from the other types historically in the UK.
I note in the late 1700's about 8 brace were shipped to the colonies (Maryland) from Liverpool. I have always wondered what type ? "greyhound " they were. I'm happy to keep anyone interested in our (or lack of them) findings, please e mail me from the link on Lakeland Hunting Memories home page
